What is a smart city?

A smart city is one that uses Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) to improve its efficiency.

What are the main objectives of a smart city?

  • To offer its citizens a better quality of life
  • To drive cost savings for governments, citizens and enterprises
  • Efficient management of infrastructures and services

What are the main requirements that a city must meet to be considered a smart city?

In order to be Smart, a city must:

  • Manage its resources and economy efficiently
  • Integrate ICTs into daily life
  • Build social cohesion (enhanced collaboration among Public Administration agencies and citizens).
  • Improve quality of life
  • Be committed to environmental protection and design a coherent urban planning

Top 10 Smart Cities of 2017

After analyzing more than 79 indicators across 10 different dimensions of urban life (economy, technology, human capital, social cohesion, international outreach, environment, mobility, transport, urban planning and public administration), these were the 10 cities most prepared for the future in 2017:

  • NY
  • London
  • Paris
  • Boston
  • San Francisco
  • Washington
  • Seoul
  • Tokyo
  • Berlin
  • Amsterdam

And last but not least…What are the main risk these cities involve?

According to the United Nations, smart cities will have 50 billion devices connected to the Internet by 2020.

This number of connected devices also has its drawbacks. Not only does it result in a considerable reduction of privacy (it is possible to know where the citizens are, what they are doing, who they are with, etc. at any time) but it also implies serious cyber risks. A hacker could take control of fundamental aspects of our daily lifes:

  • Traffic lights and street lighting
  • Electricity grid
  • Water supply or water processing plants
  • Communication systems
  • Electric car charging points
  • And many others

There is no doubt regarding the benefits of  Smart Cities but it is fundamental to keep in mind that their evolution must go hand in hand with a total, proactive and 100% secure protection
