A few months ago we published one post about everything that you should learn about the Ransomware. So as the topic is still on the news every day, we have decided to give you more specific information

Ransomware is not more that the virtual kidnapping of confidential and /or private information from our device made by a third party.  What that person wants is a quantity of money in return of the stolen information.

Altought the big effort that different companies and institutions  make in order to educate in Cybersecurity, having all the devices and systems protected  against any kind of threat it is really difficult. Some companies don’t understand how important is that small actions can avoid future problems.

The most popular  ransomware so far this year

Wanna cry: Ransomware that affected more than 200,000 computers worldwide. It affected companies in Europe, Asia and the USA. In Europe it was noted in countries like Spain or England, they are of fell the network of all English public health. This incident caused a chaos that led to stop operations and other medical procedures that could be compromised after this attack.

Petya: One of the most complex ransmoware. This type of ransomware can enter an organization through phishing emails or in Excel attachments. Once inside it tries to expand as fast as possible.

Goldeneye: Ransomware mainly affected the National Bank of Ukraine, the state-owned energy company and the largest airport in that country. What makes this type of ransomware unique is that it not only encrypts files, it also encrypts entire computer systems

Crysis: This type of ransomware became famous in 2016 unlike another type of ransomware, it detects important directories and encrypts the files that are modified.

Steps to follow to prevent Ransomware

  1. Do not download attachments of unknown origin and / or that may seem suspicious to us.
  2. Do not access unauthorized websites.
  3. Educate company workers to prevent possible problems of this type.
  4. Make backups every x time so that in case of being attacked, we can have a backup, of all the information.

But … What if you are already a victim of Ransomware?

If you have reached that point, here are the steps to follow:

  1. Immediately notify the person responsible for the company’s IT. To see which procedure to follow.
  2. Do not touch the infected device.
  3. Of course, do not pay the ransom.
